Hi All,
HOW? Preparing for extended sick absence starting soon.
I've been diagnosed with 'Pilonidal Sinus' today by my GP and having read all the facts online plus the usual horror stories it is clear I'm going to be off work for a little while.
I haven't been in work this week due to the agonizing pain but with some medication I should be able to return back towards the end of the week hopefully or next week.
What is likely to then happen is an operation within weeks with extended recovery time including daily visits to see the nurse - the recovery time will vary hugely but ball park figure of several weeks (all being well) to months (with some small complications).
I work for a truly amazing boss (the very role model for professional love mentioned in one of the many great podcasts) and a great company so I don't have any concerns at this level.
What I do worry about is leaving behind the workload, extra accountability etc to my boss and peers. I'm already missing a vital meeting with a client tomorrow where a peer of mine will now have to present my section (thankfully the sides etc were done in advance of this week!). I do also need to speak about an urgent area with another peer that they kindly delayed by a week because I have been traveling - now I'm not around to support them :/ might make a quick phone call tomorrow!
Also to add - I don't have a team working for me. I manage a supplier based in India and accountable for delivery of various SLAs and improvements etc. My peers do other related work but if I go the actual accountability needs to sit with someone.
Any advice would be much appreciated :)

There is (sorta) a podcast for that
Hi Gareth,
I send my best wishes on a speedy and complete recovery. I would encourage you to review the "How To Resign" podcast. It recently popped up in my play rotation. I believe you could adapt it to make it work for your circumstance.

Hi Martin, Thanks for your
Hi Martin,
Thanks for your recommendation. I ended up having emergency surgery on Wednesday so didn't get chance to get anything in place in advance.
I'm out of hospital however and recovering :)
I've told a few internal stakeholders I'm out on sick leave following surgery as its important they knew I wasn't about and also updated both my voicemail and email out of office message. Sent the odd email to make sure things don't stall in my absence but not much else I can do.
Hopefully wont be out too long!! Already bought a few books on my kindle so plan to spend some time reading!
Regards,
Gareth
