What do you all think of the resume templates advertised on this website? http://loftresumes.com/

I think some of them are pretty nifty looking, but they're so far removed from the sample resume available here that I think they're mostly just flash.

These look really sharp - like a glossy one-pager that a vendor might hand you at an expo.  And, just like most of those glossy one pagers I get handed at expos, I think most recruiters and hiring managers would toss them out.  Listen to any of the casts on resumes and you'll hear over and over again that anyone who's done extensive recruiting and/or hiring has a battle-hardened, pessimistic view of applicants.  They don't want to be sold to, they don't want to hear what you think is important, and they're looking for any reason to say no.  When I look at these fancy-schmancy resumes, I wonder what an applicant is compensating for.

MAAAYYBE, if they were applying for a marketing job or something where visual flash is important.  As a techie who works at a bank, these would stand out in a bad way if they appeared in my stack of resumes.  Like Andy, I might make negative assumptions based on the style:  I'd assume this person values style over substance, and the roles I hire for are the opposite of that.

Maura is thinking of exactly the caveat I was.  And, having done some creative work in the past, I've either been asked for a sample portfolio or have offered to provide one in addition to my resume.  Some of the brightest communications people I know were hired because they had a solid resume and were able to provide examples of their skills in terms of a piece of collateral or design that actually yielded the results discussed in the resume.

Mostly just flash.  So much white space!!  Think of all the info they leave off.

Oh, and the price!  MTCT only charges $30 for their resume advice and you can do the rest yourself.  $99 is expensive for something that can be done with some advanced word skills.
