Well I completed my first 03 today. It work out 15/15 minutes.
This guy is one of my best leads and we really had a good talk, about him. Even though I tried to keep it personal, he did ask for business help. His goal is to be more persausive in dealing with the team.
Thats something I will work with him on. Some of the feedback I gave him was to give only positive feedback to his team for a month. I will share the manager tools feedback model with him.
I was nervous as heck. but I made it through.
I have 34 guys, so I decided to break it down by performance.
I will meet with 3leads, 2senior techs and high performers on a weekly basis. Everyone else will be once every 3 or 4 weeks.

Do all 34 people report
Do all 34 people report directly to you? Sounds like a huge number to manage.
Is there any structure below you? For instance you do O3s with the leads, who then do O3s with staff below them.
I would think this would be more effective than you doing them all yourself, but only seeing people monthly........
It would also allow your leads to develop their management skills...
First 03s as well
I've done first five of my six O3s these last few days. As M&M say, it takes practice. They are a little bit awkward but even the fourth felt a little better than the first. Some recommendations I've heard from the podcasts (1) start with the same question every time - there's enough we have to learn in doing things so this makes things less variable. I ask, "how's it going," (2) take notes on paper and (3) no feedback during the rollout for 6-8 weeks. One thing I've added (I don't think I heard it in the casts), is to spend a few minutes immediately following the O3 to review my notes and correct, add to, amend any cryptic notes and ensure I have captured actions.

I started doing Project
I started doing Project Management O3s after attending the Sunnyvale EMC conference in January. I think the biggest surprise was when I showed up the second week in a row. About half the folks had a reaction like "Oh, this is every week. I didn't think you were serious."
I'm not getting them in every week and rescheduling is next to impossible, but just the added level of interaction has really helped the project.
Best,
