I go to a toastmasters club and it helped me improve my public speaking skills. I am just throwing this idea out there. What do folks think of having a manager tools curriculum (like Toastmasters) at the area meetings to help members/managers gain key competencies? If M&M get on board then they could help write the curriculum as well. Of course the efforts would be covered financially through membership fees paid anually/bi-anually. It will be like a Toastmasters for Managers.

Learningmgr,

Are you thinking of formal, printed curricular materials?

What I like about MT "meet ups" is that everyone shares a common vocabulary thanks to the MT podcasts. In a sense, the podcast series is the curriculum.

When a discussion topic arises at a MT meet-up (we have had two in Milwaukee already) each manager present understands recommendations like "feedback", "coaching", etc. from other managers in response to situations at work.

tlhausmann,
I am talking about a 'role playing' curriculum that a member can progress through..for example the first situation could be a 1:1 call with a direct. The 'direct' can play off a script and the 'manager' reacts accordingly.....followed by a feedback session. This would be the equivalent of the first speech in TM.
The second situation in the curriculum could be 'feedback'...and so on

am I making sense?

I love the idea. If not for the effort of pulling together the materials, I would do it immediately. ;-)

I definitely think there is value in going through scenarios ... The more rooted in real situations the better. Anyone want to practice feedback? ;-)
