Need an advice on how to behave on offsite meeting.
Key shareholder of the company I am employed at (as tier 2 manager) have initiated an offsite strategy meeting. Few things are uncommon:
- Tier 2 managers are invited for the first time (which was never before, as shareholders usually in contact with top management)
- The company is at final stage on new equity raising process, so things like expansion to new markets/products and IPO are in agenda
- According to shareholders, they expect brainstorming-like meeting, not standard Board meeting when top management "sells" something to directors.
The question to MT community is: how to behave / what to do to capture any career opportunities (if any)? The dilemma is very simple: top management pays me salary, not shareholders, which I might never see again. So tactically I should keep low profile and support position of my boss. But in this case the purpose of the meeting will not be achieved.
Any suggestions / experience?

Be fearless
Congrats on a great opportunity.
Executives and investors are looking for the best ideas, presented with clarity.
This is an opportunity to share what you know and think, the research you've done. They've asked you there because they want you there. Start out by listening and watching the dynamics. They may mostly want you to absorb the new strategy, or they may want you to help formulate it. If the former, you should still ask questions that go to the heart of how you can help implement, and to propose ways that you can contribute. If the latter, be humble when you share your thoughts. If your firm is pursuing a market you think is too small, say so (and have the numbers to back it up).
Be very respectful of everyone. Listen carefully before speaking. Avoid the first person ("I think" or "My idea").
In any case, speak up.

PS: Management may sign your checks, but the shareholders put the cash in the bank. Don't underestimate the power of the investors.
John, thank you very much
