How to handle an inquiry from my boss about job search

I am in the process of interviewing for a new role at a higher level that is in a totally different industry than the one I am currently in.  The new role is in an industry I previously worked in.

What should I tell my current manager IF he asks if I am looking for a new job?  I do not think it will happen but preparation is the key to success.

Thank you.

Doug

I think the MT advice is that people are entitled to an honest answer to any question that they are entitled to ask. Your manager isnt entitled to ask that particular question and expect an honest answer.
You can say aren't actively looking.

Mattias has hit the nail on the head.  Your manager isn't entitled to an answer to that question, for any number of reasons.  Since refusing to answer the question would effectively provide the right answer, you're quite entitled to tell your manager "no, I'm not actively looking for a new job".  That does put you in line for a slightly awkward conversation if you tender your resignation a week later, but nothing's perfect.

Thank you very much for your responses.  They are very helpful and it is nice to know that some questions are out of line.
Sincerely,
Doug
