How best to ask a boss for coaching

Hi,

is it reasonable for me to ask my boss to coach me on something? More specifically, would it be OK to suggest the MT coaching model?

My boss recently gave me an annual review, and we identified a few areas for growth. For one of these my boss's boss has also offered to be a resource. He suggested I discuss with my boss about how to take that forward. So I have a good way of opening the conversation.

I see three main options here:

1) I coach myself, using the coaching model. (As per http://www.manager-tools.com/forums-1229)

2) I ask my boss to support me in moving towards my particular growth objectives, and leave the approach up to him.

3) I ask my boss to coach me, and suggest the Manager Tools model for this

I could also see combining option 1 with either options 2 or 3.

I'd welcome your thoughts on this.

thanks,

S.

Share your goals with your boss.  That's a good idea.  See how he reacts. If he has ideas how to proceed, even better.  If not, be prepared to say "I found these resources.  What do you think?"  and then propose an action plan.  Don't explicitly ask for coaching, or point him to Manager Tools (unless he asks you explicitly where you got the model for this).
Once your boss sees that he doesn't have to train you,  he's likely to be a big supporter.
Go for it, and good for you!

John, that sounds sensible enough. I'll give it a go. Thanks, S
